In Giovanni da Verrazzano’s letters to King Francis I of France, he compares the natives to colonists and like John Smith he described how useful they can be to future colonists on assisting them to survive and use the land. Throughout his letter, Verrazzano describes in immense detail of all the Indians he had encountered along the east coast for the king and queen during his exploration. His tone within the passage is full of excitement and curiosity while he paints a vivid picture for his majesty on their dress, their home, and way of living, “Their women are of the same form and beauty, very graceful, of fine countenances and pleasing appearance in manners and modesty; they wear no clothing except a deer skin...” (Verrazzano 23) He uses this discovery of a new people and a land that has never been explored by any man as something better than finding the passage to Cathay which he did not find and was hoping to receive a reward for.
