What comes to mind is due to the coding in a culture, or a rule-governed system of signs which are shared and used to generate and circulate meanings in and for that culture. Codes are used in order to convey meanings that constitute our cultural world, many of which are seen through television, films and other forms of media. In Season 1, Episode 7 of Superman: The Animated Series, the hero and villain relationship is clearly seen throughout the film. John Corben, a criminal that escaped from prison with the help from a doctor, turned to Luthor to help him with his deadly illness. The only way to ensure that he would survive was to implant Metallo into Corben’s body. Metallo contained kryptonite, one of Superman’s true weaknesses, and allowed him to have superhuman strength and agility. Luthor ordered Corben to destroy Superman, and report back to him when the task was accomplished. In order to draw distinction between heroes (Superman) and villains (Corben), film producers use many different elements such as lighting, appearance, and behavior. All in all, I argue that these subtleties allow individuals in a society to clearly define the differences between hero and villain within the film based on cultural norms. In John Fiske’s book, Television Culture (1987), he asserts that producers (and writers) use these techniques in order to provoke certain meanings and pleasures within that particular society.
