The play follows Catherine, a 25 year old woman in Chicago, through her struggle with her late father’s decline in mental health. Her father’s world-renowned mathematical mind Story 2 may have been passed down to Catherine, but, as her sister worries, so could his mental illness. When Catherine meets a former student of her father’s, Hal, and trusts him with her mathematics proof on prime numbers, she is devastated when he and her sister doubt she had the capability to write it, stating “Your dad might have written it and explained it to you later”(Auburn 1218).
