Women in literature, like in real life, face adversity and through their journey, they find their identity while coming of age. They show the importance of women in society and the crucial role that they play. In both I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the protagonists were required to overcome adversity as they each discovered a greater sense of self. By being able to overcome their certain situations, Marguerite Angelou and Esperanza became more aware of their place in the world and society. Marguerite Angelou had a unique and troublesome life to say the least growing up. At three years old, she was shipped to Stamps, Arkansas with her brother, Bailey. There, Father’s mother and Uncle Willie lived. Ever since a young age, Marguerite felt out of place and as if she was in the wrong body. She truly believed that inside she was a white girl, who all adored. Marguerite felt hatred towards the color of her skin and wrote, “Wouldn’t they be surprised when one day I woke out of my black ugly dream...” (Angelou 2) Due to what her parents did, she dealt with abandonment issues and believed them to be dead. Moreover, segregation was prominent in Stamps and impacted her life. Years later, Marguerite traveled to visit her real Mother in St. Louis. She was shocked to find out that her parents were alive and was unsure of how to approach “Mother Dear”, as Bailey would call her. Mother Dear’s boyfriend, Mr.…

Seabiscuit reminds me of the African proverb “smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” While the main characters–Red Pollard, Seabiscuit, Tom Smith, and Charles Howard–are known for their incredible gains, their losses cannot be forgotten. With each of casts’ misfortunes came their American dreams, even if they were not aware that they would need each other to achieve it. This dream would be lead by Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit was undersized, fairly gentle, and lethargic compared to other horses.…

To say that Chuck Berry was just a rock and roll artist would be a major understatement. His songs not only changed American culture forever, but still influence it to this day. His overwhelmingly popular hit, “Sweet Little Sixteen” was released as a single in 1958. In a matter of weeks, it climbed to second on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was inspired by Berry’s countless encounters with frenzied teenagers after his shows fighting for an autograph. The lyrics were just as popular as…

In the late 1940’s, a new genre of music was starting to take shape. Music artists were starting to combine different elements of country, western, and rhythm and blues (R&B) to create what would eventually evolve into rock and roll. Haley was not the creator of rock and roll, but he was the one that changed rock and roll from a “ ‘virtually an…
