“Through my research I am trying to better understand differences between genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors for type 2 diabetes,” Flowers said. “I also look at how to optimize risk prediction and prevent type 2 diabetes for high risk racial groups.” Flowers lab is a mixture of a dry lab and a wet lab and she collaborates with other faculty members. One faculty member she collaborates with often is Kord Kober, PhD, who is another UCSF genomic laboratory lead. They both manage and oversee the Nursing Genomic Lab together. Their lab functions as a resource to faculty and Flowers and Kober manage faculty activities and facilitate faculty research. Two other faculty members who collaborate and mentor Flowers are Yoshimi Fukuoka, RN, PhD, FAAN, and Alka Kanaya, MD. Currently, Flowers, Kober, and Fukuoka are working on a pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) examining behavioral intervention weight loss for those that are Filipino with type 2 diabetes. Next, they will study gene expression associated with insulin sensitivity and intervention…
accordingly to target that specific mutation. The proliferation of bioinformatics and computational genomics plays a pivotal role in making this incentive effective. From extracting the raw data of DNA to understanding the genetic variations and clinical indication of these information, bioinformatics is leveraging these implications towards creating the personalized…
testing, risk factors, and aiding in prevention. All of these factors influence healthcare and patients. Each person can find out if they are at risk for diseases, which can lead to preventative measures. For example, “tests have been developed to detect mutations for a handful of more complex conditions such as breast, ovarian, and colon cancers” (Human Genome Project and Beyond). This can influence a person’s life if they have family members with these genes by knowing what and how they can…
we will retrospectively test the application of selected biomarkers in PDAC diagnosis, treatment evaluation and disease prognosis. As biomarkers could be in the form of genomic abnormalities or transcriptional aberrations, corresponding methods will be used for validation, which we have previously reported (118-120). The ultimate objective is to develop biomarker detection protocols for cost-effective and non-invasive detection of clinical PDAC in a highly sensitive and specific fashion. Genomic…
Truly grateful for the work opportunity and the experiences at the school. I was able to attain a work life balance. My hours at work were the same hours my children spent in the childcare. I had more time with them, a lot of family time, catch up time with friends and was able to make to Sunday church services. I try to manage my time effectively at work so I do not have it weighing on my mind when I get back home. From personal experience the benefit of maintaining a work life balance is to…
which questions get the highest mean vote. In Student Motivation to Study Abroad and Their Intercultural Development, Philip Anderson illustrates what prompts certain students to study abroad. The student participants are all a part of the American Institute for Foreign Study programs and the study was conducted over the course of two years. The students are asked questions pre and post study abroad about the following motivations to go abroad: World Enlightenment, Personal Growth, Career…
Snapchat Thesis Statement: Snapchat is a distraction that prohibits productivity and hinders personal time management. We all heard of the social platform known as Snapchat, who has a millions of users worldwide, but college students spend more time on snapchat than they actually study. When classes start, we are not used to the rhythm of school, and it takes a while to adjust. Maybe on the second or third of school, we get a homework load that looks overwhelming. Snapchat is a distraction…
The program we are evaluating is called the Inner Residence Program. Created after the events that took place during the attacks on September 11th, the program was put in place to help students and teachers that were impacted. Soon after, educators and mental health experts put together a social and emotional learning program to help these individuals. The program’s aim is to teach the teachers skills of mindfulness and resilience, to then bring into their own lives, and to teach these educators…
and by saving time, companies can save money. The technologies that companies utilize in order to save money include smartphones and computers. Nowadays, mobile smartphones can do a variety of things – act as a compass, tell you the weather, provide internet access, and take photos and videos, among many other things. The usefulness of the invention of the smartphone as a ubiquitous technology that the average citizen can use in both everyday situations and as a workplace tool speaks volumes of…
Your time to come to the United States is getting closer and closer. I can’t wait to see your family and you. I am sorry I didn’t get to respond earlier to your letters. I know how excited you are too come to America. You wish to live the “American dream” like everyone else here. But let me tell you, it is not what you think it is. The books you read and movies you watch about America being so “great” is not true. What is the American dream? The American Dream is the pursuit of prosperity and…
