Graveyard for the Hardworking Three Messages from Elegy The poem Elegy, written by Thomas Gray, is about the working class, or better known as the lower class. Thomas Gray is a romantic poet, which means that he mainly focuses on nature and the simple life. The definition of lower class is, “the social class that has the lowest status; the working class.” In this specific poem it is relating to the people and the overall town; the town is what some may call a farming town. Such as, how people look at Wyoming. The poet of this poem is the narrator as well in the poem. The narrator is telling this while sitting in a churchyard, which is a graveyard for a certain class. The upper class were not buried in the same graveyard as the working class, because where someone is buried during this time in England, represents the type of person someone was and what class they belonged to. That is why this poem’s title is Elegy, because Elegy means, sad song or the song of death, and the overall theme of this poem is the remembrance of the dead. The three messages from this poem would be, time, place, and past story. One major factor in this poem is time. The first six stanzas in the poem relate to time. In the beginning of the poem it takes place in the late afternoon, or evening. Farmers are tired and heading home after a long, and hard day at work. The author is sitting in a churchyard, which is a graveyard where the working class is buried. There is an owl perched in a tree, and the…

The cafes in the bourgeoisie centre’s wide streets became avenues of display and pleasure. As part of the proliferation of mass consumer culture, cafes in this area were no longer political, but rather places of pleasurable pastimes. They became sites for the integration of the working class worker with the white collar worker. They thus became a reflection of the changed urban environment, using a “shared set of rituals for interaction” associated with drinking, to create camaraderie between…
