An example of selfishness is when Moss tries to call Wells (a man who said he was going to help him) and Chigurh answers the phone instead and he claims that “[If] you bring me the money I’ll let [your wife] walk. Otherwise she’s accountable. The same as you.” (McCarthy 184). Here Moss knows that his wife is in danger yet later on in the book it is discovered that he does not take any action towards bringing the cash back to Chigurh. Moss is too busy trying to keep the money and protect himself even though his wife is dragged into the situation and she does not know what is going on and it is quite unfair for her. Society will often focus too much on themselves in times where they are under pressure, but this harms people who they are close to and this is what causes people to become corrupt. Another point is that humans sometimes will not help someone when they are in need. When Moss first came across the trucks in the middle of the country there was one guy and he needed “agua... Por dios.” and moss replied by claiming “I aint got no water. Moss left the door open and slung the H&K over his shoulder and stepped away” (McCarthy 13). Moss did not even make an effort to aid the dying man, he just walks away. Too often people will ignore others on the streets or people that need a quick hand with something, this is leads to people not helping others either because they actually don’t care or because of their reputation. Reputation is a big factor to selfishness because one is worrying about his or herself above anyone else and this has a dehumanizing effect because it is a loss of human interaction and
