In addition to most of the changes video games has caused in society, numerous people have found that video games have set a new standard for learning. According to Mike Ivey’s article, “A Brave New Gamer World; New Generation’s Link to Workplace Study”, many workplaces use video games as a method of learning. For instance, employees at Blockbuster Video learn to deal with customers with a video game simulation, the U.S. Army trains recruits to fight wars by playing video games and educators offer a video game field tour on biology to get their students excited (Ivey). Likewise, surgeons also use video games as a method to improve their skills during operations. In the article, “Video games put surgeons on cutting edge, study says”, the author, Paul Taylor, states that studies have shown that doctors who play video games are better at performing laparoscopic surgery. The procedure of this surgery requires the use of a microscopic …show more content…
The results showed that doctors who played video games made 37% fewer errors, were 27% faster and scored 42% better than surgeons who never played video games (Taylor). The lead researcher of the study states that “Laparoscopic surgery and video games have a lot in common, they both require the participant to execute tasks utilizing visual cues that are presented on a video monitor or screen.” (qtd. in Taylor). In many cases, video games can be used to practice and improve the skills of doctors as it is less risky to practice on a game than on a patient. Gee, a professor at the University of Wisconsin, claims that there is an enormous interest in using video games for learning and people who do not choose to invest in emerging technology for learning will be left behind (Ivey). With the application of video games in learning, it is clear that it is something that is needed as a large portion of the population plays video
