“Loneliness is my least favorite thing about life. The thing that I’m most worried about is just being alone without anybody to care for or someone who will care for me” (brainyquote.com). This quote from Anne Hathaway speaks about how loneliness affects people everyday and many people do not have anybody, or are fearful to be alone. The novel Of Mice and Men takes place in Soledad, California during the time of the Great Depression. The book is based around the found place of work of Lennie Small and George Milton, two migrant workers. The book focuses on the drama and true historical problems during that time. Candy only had his dog to accompany him everyday and without him, he is extremely lonesome. Him being lonely, causes him to reach out to his friends in his time of need. Candy tells a few men in the bunkhouse, “‘You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn’t no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebody 'd shoot me. But they won 't do nothing like that. I won 't have no place to go, an ' I can 't get no more jobs’” (Steinbeck 60). Candy is talking about how he came to realize, from the help of others, that his dog was much too old to be happy any longer, and Candy was forced to allow his dog to be shot. Without his dog, Candy is emotionally destroyed and fears to go on in life without his only friend. Candy mentions that he will not be able to attain a job anywhere else and that is because he lost his hand in a farming accident. Although he has just lost his dog and is very upset, Candy still voices his opinion and talks about his feelings to others. Sharing his thoughts is how Candy handles his loneliness. Another way how loneliness is shown to affect him, is when Candy exclaims, “‘And they give me two hundred and fifty dollars 'cause I lost my hand. An ' I got fifty more saved up right in the bank right now. That 's three hundred…’” (Steinbeck 60). Curley’s wife is lonesome because her husband is never around, she stays home all day, and she is not trusted by her husband to talk to other people. Candy is clearly lonesome without his dog, but he opens up about his feelings and reaches out to his friends. Crooks shares his feelings and allows others to speak to him, even though he is supposed to be alone. Loneliness is most likely Curley’s wife, Candy, and Crooks’ least favorite thing about life.
