Acute kidney failure is an abrupt loss of kidney function to filter waste products from the body’s blood. It usually occurs rapidly within a few hours or days. Possible causes are acute tubular necrosis, disorders that result in blood clotting within the kidney vessels, pregnancy complications, and infections that directly injure the kidney (MedlinePlus, 2015). It is common in individuals who are critically ill and need intensive care. Symptoms may include urine output decrease, decrease in appetite, nausea, seizures, fatigue, high blood pressure, bloody stools, and shortness of breath (MedlinePlus, 2015). Acute kidney failure can be deadly, however it can also be reversible.
