When listening, you must engage in the conversation and be an active listener. That means keeping eye contact, answering the questions they may ask as well as engaging in the conversation. In the work place, when listening to a patient with a chief complaint you may reiterate what they just explained in your own words just to show them you were listening and understand everything they said. Being an active listener helps build rapport with your patients ensuring that they stay with you and continue services. A great experience I had with an active listener in the field is when I was pregnant with my twins and found out I would be getting an emergency C-section just moments after my weekly checkup. I was so afraid; I mean I have never even broken a bone let alone went through surgery. Other than minor illnesses I probably hadn’t had to even check into a hospital since birth. Also to top it off, as a first time mother I had no clue what to expect. How was I supposed to let you cut me open one day and be able to attend to my not one but two new born babies. I literally had zero faith. My nurse on call when I checked in restored that faith however. I am not sure if she was just doing her job or genuinely cared about what I had to say but she sat and listened to my fears, joys, and watched my tears until my family arrived. Social awareness is like being emotionally intelligent and empathic all at once. You understand what and why people think about you, because of this is makes you strive to be the best worker you can be as well as go the extra mile. It is similar to naturally wanting to be an over achiever. A great example of this is when you go to a restaurant and your waiter is exceptional. Your waiter is exceptional because they know that’s what you would expect plus that would be the kind of service they would like to receive if they were the customer. Those things plus their tip will be based off of their performance but that is the same as a clinic. We should always work hard because it is expected and because we would want the same if we were the one in need.
