There is much agreement that creativity is beneficial for the healthy development of children. However, what challenges are present when the child has an atypical learning style or developmental delay? Children with Autism Spectrum Diagnosis characteristically have certain sensory sensitivities to touch/texture, light, sound, or smell. These sensitivities can present an obstacle when gaining an understanding of the world through hands-on art education. Similarly, children with another atypical learning need, Attention Hyperactivity Disorder, characteristically do not have the prolonged concentration or patience for sustained traditional academic learning.

Capacity building means that the schools have a "top-down" responsibility to accommodate and encourage appropriate learning supports for the needs of all students, regardless of their apparent limitations (Morse, Comprehensive Special Education Programming for Students with Autism, 2010). Some of these tactics include: actively seeking out students who are suspected of having a disability, comprehensively evaluating those students to confirm the suspicion of those support needs, providing a process for a written plan known as an Individual Education Plan (IEP), and finally placing those students in what is agreed upon among the staff/faculty and parents as their least restrictive environment.
