In The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green, characters Augustus and Hazel fall in love. They both have a fatal illness yet they both fall in love knowing one will die and hurt the other. They don’t talk about what they want in life, just that they want to be together. They focus on spending time with each other and not thinking about the little time they have. They look for the brighter things in life when they have such a dark thing taking over their bodies. Later in the book, Augustus passes away from cancer that took over his body, yet Hazel still loved what he gave her in his short life. Hazel loved what Augustus gave her in life: the small picnics, spending time hanging out with other friends, and sharing a common interest in their favorite author. They do whatever it takes to love because they know that their time together is short. They learn to love the little moments when they were together. In That 70’s Show, Steven and Jackie, a loving but troubled couple in the show, cheat on each other when they misunderstand each other. Most people today are not going to do illegal activities to win the love of another. Love nowadays can be found in new ways of meeting. Some couples have met on online dating sites, which is far different from how people met in 1922. Most people do not do the little things like opening the car door, or bringing flowers on the first date. People find that it is hard to find “the one,” so they use different techniques to find new people. On dating profiles, people find matches who have some of the same characteristics as them and they end up matching together perfectly. This would make it easier to talk to the person because you know what you have in common. Love is difficult to find, but at least there are newer ways of attaining it. Dating sites are not the only new aspects of love in today’s society. There is a difference in views, and how people act around each other. Everything is much more casual than what life was like in the 1920s. For instance, the elegant dressed dinner dates of Gatsby’s day are now overrun by the common usage of denim jeans and overpriced movie theaters. Or how people are now more interested in public displays of affection than the “old fashioned” dinner talks. Even with less and less elegance, romance still continues to blossom.
