Since women have this ability, I believe that they will have a higher score for remembering visual pictures. Also, women use more elaborate and emotional language. Due to this characteristic, women will be able to understand emotional details in a story. Thus these characteristics of women are a factor to my hypothesis. This experiment was conducted at Florida SouthWestern State College in a Human Growth and Development class. The class of college students was divided by their gender. There were a total of 4 males and 33 females in the class. There was one group of males and one group of females. The students received five different memory tests. These include two visual-spatial memory tests, two word recall memory tests and one story recall memory test. The two visual-spatial tests showed symbols across a screen. The students had to remember the shapes and draw what they remembered. Also, the word recall tests used a list of 12 words that are similar in meaning. The students had to write down as many words as possible that they could recall. The first test included words in a category of sleeping, such as bed and the second included sports, such as a basket. The story recall memory …show more content…
Before the experiment was conducted, I inferred that males would score much lower than females on word recall. However, they did score low, but with very little difference. Males also scored higher on visual-spatial tests than females. I felt that women would have scored higher due to their abilities to memorize objects and locations. However, men have spatial abilities that were shown in the tests conducted. I was unclear of how effective their abilities were until the results were conducted. I enjoyed being a part of the experiment. As a participant and a student, I saw both aspects of being a participant and a researcher. Receiving both aspects has improved my understanding of the experiment and the concepts of gender and memory. The main difference that I saw between the tests was the strategies for memorizing. During the word-recall and visual-spatial tests, I tried to picture the words and shapes in my head after they were taken away. While with the story recall, I listened closely to the little details. I noticed that these strategies were essential to remember the aspects of each test. I feel that biological aspects are the most dominate contributor to gender differences when it comes to memory. Biologically, there are some differences of male and female that play a role in how well they can perform. For example, men have spatial abilities and a larger brain, while women have memory for locations and objects. There are few
