Research suggests that both direct victimization and indirect exposure, such as witnessing violent acts, can have harmful effects on young children’s development (Oravecz et al., 2011, p. 311). Are these children afraid to go outside? Have they seen the violence that occurs in the neighborhood or in the home? How does this affect their mental health? In also working with the micro practice, not only will the social worker be working with the child at home but also in the school setting. Are their studies affected by the violence in the neighborhood? Does s/he have problems with their emotions in school or at home? These are all scenarios that social workers have to take into consideration when working within the generalist practice
