2. What is the main setting in the story? (location, time period, environment) There were two main settings: Martin’s home in Zimbabwe and Caitlin’s home in Pennsylvania. Martin’s town is really poor and dirty and people have to share houses and food and he walks to school. Caitlin’s town has nice big houses and a mall and a good school. The whole story takes place in the late 90s and early 2000s.

She chose to write to Zimbabwe and Martin received her letter. Each of them were intrigued by the other one’s life in another country, so they continued to write back and forth. Through this correspondence, they became close friends. Caitlin learned that Martin’s family was struggling to pay for rent, school, clothing, and food. She decided that she would help since her family had more money than his. They sent him money, clothes, shoes and other important supplies that helped his family survive.
