The role of religion has been of much debate in sociology some say it acts as an inhibiting force for social change. Weber performed detaied qualitative research fom specific religions during specific periods. He called his approach verstehen the german word for understanding. He was particularly interested in the ecomonic impacts of religion,but his defining work as metioned above was protestant work ethic and the spirit of capitalism.
He talked about how capitalism originated by looking at religion. his view was that protestant ethic that originated through christianity acted as a touch for industrial revolution. Though catholisim was the dominant relion in that period, many followers were displeased by the conduct of the church, how the internal corruption within the clergy was increasing and the priests and bishops were busy in money making.
In germany the renegrade monk Martin Luthar started PROTESTANTISM. He wrote 95 thieses and nailed it on the wall of the church.
