According to the comparison of movements in paper 1, as for the topic of space, I found out that Minimalism may be one step forward for functionalism to purchase the spatial freedom which required by people as time goes by.
Starting from earliest times to present day, people always make great efforts to purchase the freedom of space. And the reason why the works done by Le Corbusier have a strong appeal is mainly because of his quest for freedom in architecture. The new generation of architects which Sejima belongs to is commented as “the generation trained by digital media”. Because of the development of technology and the changing bottom line of privacy in this society, they are able to achieve more on purchasing spatial freedom. Sejima suggested that architecture should not be limited by certain order but change with the time and objects enter into it. Thus she creates her designs with clean white elements including glass, marble, and metals. Large windows allow natural light to enter a space, and make space be involved with the world which is on the other side of the glass. In her explanation, although public space and private space are completely different, the two spatial types still relate to each other with a level of continuity. Indeed, the Small house looks so over-transparent that people might think it has lost the function of being a residential. In fact, the spatial settlement of the residential still works functionally. Private spaces like bathroom and bedroom are hidden at corner and underground covered by solid cladding. Moreover, the basement floor is not completely covered by the ground. The upper part is still opened slightly to accept natural daylight and block views from outside in order to keep the privacy for dwellers.
