Peru is located in the Middle West part of South America left to Brazil and under Ecuador. Its capital is Lima, which is the largest city, containing one third of the total population in Peru, alongside cities such as Arequipa, Trujillo and Chiclayo. Its terrain is unique in the sense that it consists of many different types of environments. Anywhere from the coastal plain/ sea side to the rugged snow peaked Andes or even the Amazonian jungle. When it comes to the people of Peru they are referred to as Peruvians. There are about 28.4 million Peruvians ranging from different ethnic groups. For example, there are forty five percent Indians, thirty seven percent Mestizo, fifteen percent Caucasian, and three percent “Other” such as African, Japanese, and Chinese. Even though there is variation within the communities there are only three main languages spoken in Peru. These are Spanish, which obviously came when the Spanish conquest, Quechua, which is derived from the Native people of Peru, and Aymara, which is a language derived from an Indian tribe near Lake Titicaca. The main religion of Peru, that is very evident in everyday life and in festivals, is Roman Catholic. For example, a Peruvian meal may consist of something called “cuy” which is guinea pig. Many different restaurants even have a pen full of them where you can pick and choose which one you would like for dinner. Another food that is controversial is cat. Some places, usually near the mountains, think it’s perfectly acceptable to dine on the felines. On the other hand the most well-known and universal food would have to be the potato. The potato is native to Peru and only became exported when the Spanish came. Other ingredients that are staples in Peru include: “maíz morado”, black/purple colored corn, lucuma, a dry melt in your mouth fruit, yuca, a starchy potato-like root, and quinoa, a bean-shaped grain used as anything from a breakfast cereal to main dishes and salads due to its nutritional value. A lot of these ingredients are things you can find in everyday life and especially in street
