This compromise was made in order to keep the southern states happy in order to agree with the new Constitution. This compromise, lead to the protection of, “the Atlantic slave trade… for at least 20 years” (Shea 56). Which is written in the Constitution, “Article 1, Section 9, Clause 1..., prohibits Congress from stopping the importation of slaves from overseas until 1808” (Shea 56). With this, many Northerners pointed out the irony of celebrating the creation of a free country while still having slavery. Article 1 describes the legislative branch. It lists all the powers the government has in Section 8, Clauses 1-17. Also in that same section, Clause 18 which does not give power, but allows the government to expand its enumerated powers. Section 9 lists the powers the government doesn’t have.
