This assessment was designed to evaluate the overall ability for a student to present themselves in a job seeking situation and during a personal interview. While the assessment evaluates the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, the main emphasis is on speaking and writing. The understanding is that the output of speaking and writing will provide important feedback on a student’s listening and reading skills.

The objectives of the assessment are threefold. First and from an achievement perspective, is to determine to what degree the student has mastered the material studied. Next and from a placement perspective, is to determine the general placement of the student for future classes and for groupings for future assignments. Last and from a diagnostic perspective, is to determine specifically what the student needs to work on in the future.

The test is summative because it is given at the end of a complex unit and is intended to evaluate the overall knowledge gained during the last several weeks. The integrative approach to creating this assessment was to fill the requirements of a performance-based assessment because the objective is to make sure the student can perform in an interview setting. The assessment involves oral production, written production, open-ended responses and it integrates all language skills in an interactive manner. Another important feature of the assessment is to provide specific feedback to the students on the lesson they just completed and as such, it is characterized as a criterion-referenced test. The test has both subjective and objective elements. Part 1 is an objective worksheet and Part 2 and 3 are graded using rubrics that need to be completed by an experienced individual and with a fairly high level of subjectivity on certain scoring elements.
