Describe Missouri Compromise
|
☆ Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state.
• In 1819 there were 22 states (half free and half slave)
•Admission of Missouri would upset balance in Senate in favor of slavery.
•Henry Clay, helped form compromise.
• As a Result, Maine was admitted as free state, Missouri was admitted as slave state. It divided territory along 36.33' for future statehood (North free, South open to slavery) • Missouri Compromise was made in attempts to preserve balance and prevent future conflicts, but it didn't work. |
