What is labelling ? |
To label someone is to attach a meaning or definition to them. For example teachers may label a pupil as bright or thick, troublemaker or hardworking |
What is a self-fulling prophecy? |
A self fulling prophecy is a prediction that comes true simply by virtue of it having been made. Interactionist argue that labelling can effect pupils achievement by creating a self-fulling prophecy. |
What is streaming ? |
Streaming involves separating children into different ability groups or classes called ‘ streams ‘. Each ability group is then taught separately from others for all subjects. Studies show that a self-fulfilling prophecy is more likely to occur when children are streamed |
What is step 1 and 2 of the self-fulfilling prophecy ? |
Step 1 : the teacher labels the student ( very intelligent) on basis of this label, makes predictions about them. Step 2 : the teacher treats the pupil accordingly, acting as if the prediction is already true ( giving more attention, expecting higher standards of work ) |
What is step 3 of the self-fulfilling prophecy ? |
Step 3 : the pupil internalises the teachers expectation of them, which becomes part of their self-concept or self-image, so they now become the kind of student the teacher believed them to be in the first place. |
What are pupil subcultures ? |
A pupil subculture is a group of pupils who share similar values and behaviour patterns. Pupil subcultures often emerge as a response to the way pupils have been labelled, and in particular as a reaction to streaming. |
What are Colin Lacey’s (1970) concepts of differentiation? |
Differentiation : the process of teachers categorising pupils according to how they perceive their ability, attitude and/or behaviour. Streaming is a form of differentiation |
What is Colin Lacey’s (1979) concept of polarisation? |
Polarisation: the process in which pupils respond to streaming by moving towards one of two opposite ‘poles’ or extremes. |
What is pro-school subculture? |
Pupils placed in high streams tend to remain committed to school values. They gain their status in the approved manner, through academic success. Their values are those of the school |
What is anti-school subculture? |
Those placed in low streams suffer loss of self-esteem: the school has undermined their self-worth by placing them in a position of inferior status . |
