Describe what comprises he operational environment and how it impacts planning |
A composite of the conditions, circumstances, and influences that affect the employment of capabilities and bear on the decisions of the commander. Commanders analyze the battlespace to determine area of interest, influence, and operations |
Describe the three aspects of the battlespace and how they inter relate |
Area of Interest: contains friendly and enemy forces, capabilities, infrastructure, and terrain that concern a commander. Includes area of influence and all objectives or enemy that could affect mission accomplishment. Commanders are unconstrained in determining Area of Influence: area a commander can affect through maneuver, fires, or other actions of his force. Based on physical limits of organic systems. Reflects the forces operational reach and allows a commander to assign subordinate areas of operations Area of Operations : prescribes by physical boundaries and normally large enough for commanders to employ their forces to protect the force and accomplish their mission to the limits of capabilities. Area of operations is two dimensional and airspace must be requested. MAGTF commanders assign areas of operations to subordinates when they are assigned ground based tactical tasks. Should be smaller than area of influence. |
Describe the purpose of maneuver control measures |
To assign responsibilities, coordinate fire and maneuver, and control combat operations. Boundaries are the basic maneuver control measure. Restrictive in that fires cannot cross without coordination. Permissive in that commanders have complete freedom of fire and maneuver within boundaries. |
Describe the purpose of FSCMs |
Facilitate the rapid engagement of targets while providing safeguards for friendly forces |
Define the single battle concept to include the battlespace framework |
Single Battle Concept: Commanders must view the battlespace as a single indivisible entity. Prepare during planning via intent so subordinates can practice initiative and judgement. Battlespace framework: Deep Operations: provide opportunity to shape or prevent future close battles. Normally focus on enemy follow on and support forces, C2 nodes, LOCs Close Operations: project power against enemy forces in immediate contact. Focus combat power to create effects that lead to a decision. Rear Operations: sustainment and security typically dominant. Ensure the freedom of action of the force and continuity of operations, logistics, and C2. Other way to organize framework: Main Effort, Reserve, Security The deep, close, and rear areas can share the same space and be more of a function of time. Other way to organize framework: Shaping, Sustaining, Decisive Action
Define shaping actions in relation to deep operations |
Interdiction through fire and maneuver Surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition Information ops integrating deception and MISO Offensive anti air warfare Electronic warfare |
Define decisive actions in relation to close operations |
Fire and maneuver conducted by combined arms forces from the GCE and ACE supported but the LCE. Focusing combat power to create effects that lead to a decision |
Define sustaining actions in relation to rear operations |
Communication Intelligence Sustainment Security Movement Area management Infrastructure development Host nation support |
Describe techniques for identifying centers of gravity and associated critical vulnerabilities |
Ask where is the enemy vulnerable? Focus efforts against the most damaging CV. CV is always a pathway to attacking a CG CG-physical or moral entities that are the primary components of physical strength, moral strength, power, or resistance CC-primary ability of a CG. What can it do to you? Key words; prevent, destroy, seize CR-conditions, resources, and means essential for the CG to achieve its CC CV-CRs or components thereof that are vulnerable to neutralization in a way that will cause the CG to fail to achieve its CC. |
Describe the relationship between tactical tasks any associated purposes |
May be specified, implied, or essential. May be modified if explicitly stated. Are assigned based on capabilities to the GCE, LCE, and ACE. Can be enemy, friendly, terrain, or population oriented tasks Task and purpose Purpose must be ambiguous and endure beyond contact. |
