4 reasons that the Soviet Union could take control in eastern europe |
-There was a political vacuum: This meant that Stalin could help communist parties into power -The Soviet Union was needed to restore law and order after WW2 -European economies were shattered and Stalin could take over industry. -Stalin wanted to defend the USSR and this was his perfect excuse

How were the people of eastern Europe affected by the Soviet control? |
Freedom- They lost freedom of speech, newspapers were censored, non communists were put in prison and people were forbidden from traveling to Western Europe Wealth- while eastern european economies initially recovered up until 1955- wages were behind that in other countries and they were forbidden from applying for Marshall aid from the USA Consumer goods- long after the war the people of eastern Europe still had shortages of milk, coal and meat. Clothing was expensive and items that were common in the west such as televisions and radios could not be gotten |

A group in the communist party opposed Rakosi and Moscow retired him. The new leader Gero is no more accepted by the people and on the 23rd of October a huge statue of Stalin was torn down in Budapest . |
