Medulla |
Base of the brain, controls life sustaining functions such as breathing, blood pressure, heat rate, and digestive and and circulatory systems |
Pons |
Relays messages from the brain to the brain stem. Responsible for relaxation, sleep, and dreaming |
Reticular Formation |
Plays an important role in controlling arousal and awareness and focusing on something. |
Cerebellum |
Means "little brain." Coordinates muscle movement plays an important role in balance and learning. |
Thalamus |
Like a "switchboard" it sends sensory information (except smell) to appropriate areas of the brain |
Hypothalamus |
It directs several maintenance activities like eating, drinking, and body tempeture. |
Hippocampus |
Processing and storage of memory |
Amygdala |
Linked to emotions of fear and anger |
Corpus Callosum |
Connects the right and left hemispheres and allows communicated between the two |
Sensory Cortex |
Located in the pariental lobes; registers and processes body touch and movement sensations |
Motor cortex |
Located in the frontal lobes; controls vouluntary movement. Top of the motor cortex controls lower half of body and bottom of motor cortex control upper half of body. |
Frontal Lobe |
Located right behind the forehead. Ivolved in higher order thinking particularly judgement |
Pariental Lobe |
Located in the back of the head. Includes areas that receive information from the visual fields. |
Temporal Lobe |
Located right above the ears. Reception and interpretation of auditory stimuli. |
Broca's Area |
Located in the frontal lobe. Controls one's ability to speak (speech production). |
Wernucke's Area |
Located in teh temporal lobe. Concerned with comprehension of Language (ability to understand language). |
Brain Stem |
Oldest part of the brain responsible for automatic survival functions (Medulla, Pond, Reticular Formation, & Cerebellum). |
Limbic System |
Associated with emotions, drives, and memory (Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Hippocampus, & Amygdala). |
Cerebral Cortex |
Thin layer of interconnected nuerons covering the cerebral hemispheres. Divided into 4 lobes (Corpus Callosum, Sensory Cortex, Motor Cortex, Frontal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, & Temporal Lobe). |
