PO? |
Per oral - give via mouth Used for the majority of drugs because of ease as can be given by untrained people and can be easily developed |
What does parenteral mean? |
Any means of administration other than PO. Par= outside Enteral= gut |
IV? |
Intravenous - into a vein (generally peripheral). Introduces drug directly into vasculature meaning drug does not have to spend time being absorbed into the circulation. Requires training, needs to be sterile. |
Indication for Intra-arterial? |
Seldom used in drug administration but may be used for diagnostic imaging. (ie angiogram) |
IM? |
Intramuscular. Easier administration than IV with better absorption than SC. Can introduce infection or cause damage to muscle (meat species) |
SC (or SQ)? |
Subcutaneous. Injection into subcutaneous space between skin and underlying tissue. Advantages include being able to give large volumes of drugs with relative ease. |
SL? |
Sublingual - used for drugs that are readily metabolised by the liver as SL administration avoids passing through the liver on its way to the systemic circulation. |
What method of administration share many similar features with SL? |
Rectal |
IO? |
Intra-osseous. Injection of the drug directly into bone. Used if animal's blood pressure is too low to give drug IV.
What is the indication for Inhalation of medications? |
Targeted therapy - Lungs - used when wanting to get higher concentration of drug in the lungs.
What is the indication for topical use of medications? |
Targeted therapy - topical - Good for dermal use or eyes. |
What is meant by the term inter-articular injection and what is the indication for its use? |
Into a joint. Used for targeted therapy into a joint - rarely used. |
What is the indication for intracardiac injection? |
Used in instances where finding a peripheral vein will be extremely difficult (think trying to give an injection into a mouse's vein).
What is meant by the term epidural? |
Given into the epidural space. |
IP? |
Intraperitoneal - highly vascular so could be used in instances when animal has very low blood pressure. Runs risk of perforating gut leading to leaking of contents into the abdominal cavity. |
