What causes tectonic plates to move? |
This is due to connection currents in the Earth's mantle. |
What happens when two tectonic plates meet and what do they cause? |
The Earth's crust becomes unstable. They either rub against each other or go underneath or over one another, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. |
What happens when two CONTINENTAL plate collide? |
Mountain ranges form and crystal crumples. |
What are the parts of the Earth made of? |
Crust - mostly Granite and rock Mantle - Made of solid and molten rock Core - Iron and Nickel |
What are the types of igneous rocks? |
Extrusive (surface above ground) Intrusive (underneath ground) |
What is the relationship between the rate of cooling of the rock and the size of the crystals? |
The slower the cooling goes, the bigger the crystals become. |
What can be inside a sedimentary rock? |
Fossils |
What is the relationship between the age of the fossil and the distance from the surface of the Earth? |
The lower down in the Earth they are, the weaker and older they are. Fossils become very difficult to extract. |
What are the types of rock? |
Igneous(Basalt) , Sedimentary(limestone) and Metamorphic(Slate) |
What is a rock? |
A mixture of various minerals. No set composition |
What is an ore? |
Also a rock but it must contain enough metal/mineral to make it viable to extract the metal from it. |
What is a Mineral? |
Usually a pure compound but may be an element, containing a metal and non-metal parts. Has formula and fixed compositions. |
What is a metal? |
Metal is a pure element;all atoms are the same. |
What are the gases present in the atmosphere? |
Nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and other gases. |
Why would limestone erode faster than other rocks? |
Any rock that predominantly contains calcium carbonate will erode faster in acid rain. |
What are the stages of the rock cycle? |
Weathering, Erosion, Transportation, Burial/Compression/Cementation, Heat and Pressure, Melting, Cooling, Exposure |
What are stratas? |
They are layers of rocks. |
