Forgiving someone has various definitions for every individual. For me forgiving is sweeping a problem under the rug until it resurfaces one day, for another forgiveness may mean erasing and accepting to avoid losing someone you love or care for, and for some forgetting the whole thing ever happened. As I stated above it can be a very difficult concept for some individuals, but the person asking to be forgiven can also impact the decision. There are many scenarios where its impossible to even ask the person across from you to forget; for example a murderer can not ask the victims family for forgiveness and have high expectations that they will accept. In another case, John, who stole Casey’s watch cannot ask her to accept his apology if it is clear that he does not mean it; his action and sincerity will impact Casey’s decisions. You cant expect to forgive someone unbelievable action because it is virtuous and the right thing to do. This is the contrast between Tara and Mma. Both see the importance of goodness and morality of behaviour, but in my opinion Tara is more realistic. In a world where we are surrounded by possibilities of getting hurt through physical, mental, and emotional pain it is unrealistic to be trusting and forgiving towards a man who has been deemed as guilty. Yes this doesn’t define him, but if you caught for plagiarism in university you get deemed as a plagiarizer for your whole life and it is this risk that makes you strive to create you own work. Plagiarizing doesn’t define me, but it defines my work ethics. His criminal record doesn’t define him but it does define his morality and the length he would go.
