I began my high school career at Parish Episcopal School and looked forward to four great years, however, I soon learned that it in fact was not the right school for me. Academically and socially, I knew that Parish wasn't the high school where I could truly succeed. After the first semester and much discussion with both my teachers and parents, I decided to make the move to the public high school near my home. At Highland Park High School, I was able to quickly integrate and become the student and person I knew I could be. Although my transition was mostly seamless, my science courses did not match up because I transferred mid-year. Parish’s curriculum has physics for freshman whereas Highland Park has biology. “Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…

Comparing Freemont High to Maryville High High school should be a place where teens feel comfortable, and to a certain extent, free to make their own decisions. At Freemont High School (FHS), Jonathan Kozol interviewed the students’ attendance, and all of them said this school was none of the things it is supposed to be. Though Maryville High School, a small town East Tennessee school, is extremely different than Freemont High School, an inner city school in Los Angeles, at first glance, the two actually have a few things in common. When looking at what Jonathan Kozol’s wrote in his article about FHS, a Los Angeles high school called, “Freemont High School”, written in 2005, three similarities arise: crowded lunches, unsanitary conditions, and freedom. At Freemont High School there are…

Immediately after Elementary school, I transferred to a strict charter school and remained there for four and a half years. Though the charter school was known for its academic achievements and its high test rankings, the academic success wasn’t enough for me. I craved a more wholesome learning experience. I realized halfway through sophomore year that the academics were only half the battle. I lacked the ability to communicate efficiently with others.…

I’ve always loved the sound of rain. Its soft patter against my window releases me from the stresses of college applications, if only for a moment. Then, as quickly as it came, the rain stops its descent upon my window and retreats; growing up in Central Florida, I have been well accustomed to erratic weather patterns such as the rain coming and going in a moment’s notice. Florida’s weather has taught me a valuable lesson over the years: life can be as unpredictable as the weather.…

Emerson Catholic High School was not so terrible, but I came into it from a public middle school, and it was not like everyone was in the same boat because all of the private school kids knew each other from years and years of private, Catholic education. I was not Catholic either, so at first I did not know any of the prayers they were saying, but I caught on. Eventually I acted like I was a Catholic to fit in, when really I was just a Christian, curious as to how their lifestyle was. Yeah, high school was an interesting ride. Going back to school on a Monday was almost as…

In general what comes to mind when one thinks about the average public High School? First there's the cinderblock walls, ironically mimicking that of prisons, if not for their colorful hand-print wall art. Then you have the boring lunches, which tend to trick the masses into being tasteful with their overload of caloric salt and oil content. When comparing America's public high schools to that of the most elite boarding school in the nation, the differences are far beyond singular. For the privileges these students concur are borderline royalty.…

I would like to attend the Wake STEM Early College High School because the work that I am doing now, I feel is way too easy and tend to get bored because of the repetitiveness of what we are learning. Some sort of challenge or obstacle is needed for me to get really engaged in the activity received. I currently show maturity and willingness to work, by completing work and trying to get it done and have it acceptable for review. In doing so, I check my work before I turn it in to make sure it makes sense and is precise. I am enthusiastic about learning, the only problem is that when we go over something over and over, it gets repetitive.…
