Did you know that over 40% of the nation’s schools have cut recess completely? Recess is necessary for elementary and middle schools. Kids need more exercise, they need a break to let out their energy, and they need to learn social interaction. First of all, kids need more exercise. Tamara Herrera, a 6th grader at Lewis Central Middle School has an opinion on the huge amount of obese children in the US. “Yes. I see lots of kids at school eating too much, and they need to lose that by having recess.” The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) says that obesity in children has doubled in the past 30 years. Recess has kids running and that gets them lots of exercise. Kids need to build muscles to grow. Secondly, kids need a break to …show more content…
Many kids might not have friends, recess is a chance to meet new people. At lunch, we can’t just get up and talk to someone new and make new friendships. “When playing with others, children learn appropriate social behaviors, such as sharing, cooperating, and respecting the property of others.” (SCOOE Child and Family Services.) Recess can also keep kids out of trouble, they can join good groups of friends instead of being alone and possibly hanging out with the wrong people. Others might say recess helps improve test scores, meaning kids pay more attention in school and have better grades. However test scores are important, but cutting recess has no help with it. NASPE (National Association of Sports and Physical Education) disagrees. “Recess is needed. Unstructured free time gives children to refocus and refresh for learning activities, it doesn’t improve learning at all.” Recess gives them time to let themselves out, so they come back focused because they are feeling better about themselves, happy because they were having fun. Schools need recess, there’s lots of benefits; Child obesity could be reduced, kids need to let out their energy, and the big importance of social interaction in kids.
