Should Animal Testing Be Illegal?

Improved Essays
Over 100 million animals are tested every year and most are killed in labs the where they had been experimented on (“Experiments on Animals: Overview”). Animals are used in many ways, such as being bred for specific genes, being used as models to replicate human diseases, and being the test subjects for drugs and vaccines to improve human health ("Biomedical Research”). Animals like dogs, cats, mice, rabbits, pigs, chimpanzees and much more are in isolation in laboratories all over the world getting tortured, sick, and killed all for a test for human medicine (“Harm and Suffering”). However, though some argue their problems are not a valid issue as the animal testing industry is highly regulated. Despite the regulation of medical animal testing, it should be illegal because of the unethical treatment of animals, the unreliable research involved, and the alternatives already available.

One of the biggest reasons animal testing for medicine should be illegal is because it is very unethical. These animals go through physical and mental pain when they are tested on. For example, medical research, involves the animals being

Diseases put into animals in the laboratory are usually never the exact same diseases that occur in humans. That limits the possibility of a result that could successfully be used for a human. Scientists that perform tests on animals know that the animal model can never be fully replicated to the human condition ("Experiments on Animals: Overview”). This will lead the patients to false hope in reaching a reliable cure. As over $12 billion worth of taxpayer money is wasted on animal testing to produce vaccines that only 5% get clinically tested and licensed for human use in America alone ("Biomedical Research”). That is a lot of money wasted and millions of animal deaths leading to research that isn’t used for

People, especially scientists, are hurting innocent animals that did no harm to anyone. Animal testing shouldn't be allowed to happen because animals are getting hurt, they are not protected, and animals get mistreated. One reason that animal testing shouldn’t be allowed is because animals are getting hurt. For instance, the Draize eye test involves rabbits having their eyelids clipped open for as long as multiple days so that they don’t blink the product being tested away. Popular cosmetic brands like L'oreal, Lancome, Estee Lauder, and S.C. Johnson are used on animals.…

When speaking of animal research, it is easy to see it as a morbid, more grotesque field. This is likely because it is easy to see the words “research” and “experimentation” as surgeries that are performed to see if something works and could usually result in death of the animal used in the experiment. However, this is not so, with much of today’s technology animal research and experimentation is performed when there is no better alternative and with medical advancements we can safely perform many experimental surgeries and procedures on laboratory animals. So then, why should we? Well over the past century the amount of progress made in medical treatments for many diseases is so great due to animal research that there are many diseases that…

Some reasons why animal experimentation should stay legal is because it helps keep humans alive by helping cure things like diseases and cancer. I really they should cut down on the amount of animals they use every year. When you want to test a drug for side effects animals have similar circulatory systems to humans. DNA of chimpanzees are about 99% similar to humans which would they are ideal for experiments, and mice are 98% similar. Its for the animals too, a lot of them could have died from rabies, infections hepatitis virus, etc.…

The only way I can think of that people can justify the use of animals in testing is because of how it helps human. But that’s just not the case anymore. In March 2006, six human volunteers were injected with a drug that had been cleared in rats, rabbits, mice and monkeys with no effects. And within minutes the volunteers were withering on the floor with agony. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/aysha-akhtar/animal- experiments_b_4209541.html) “elephant man trial”…

In the 1900’s people around the globe started testing their drugs and other such tests on animals. These tests would be done on animals to test if their product would be dangerous to humans and to see the results. The test resulted in millions of rats, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits dying just to see if a product would be successful. Testing animals is inhumane and endangers the animals being tested on and should be stopped because testing on animals endangers the animals, Animals can’t speak for themselves and so we don’t know what it is that they want. and By testing animals we are endangering their safety and all other animals that are born from the tested parent and could have bad effects from the test.…

According to the Humane Society, “Animals being used in experiments are subjected to food and water deprivation, long periods of physical movement restraint, and burns along with other wounds to study the healing process” (Costa). These are crucial points to ban animal testing. When you take animals and conduct experiments on them it affects them deeply. “The Draize Eye Test is used by cosmetic companies to study irritation caused by shampoos and other products, involves rabbits being held in stocks with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for multiple days, so they cannot blink away the products being tested” (Costa). Everyday millions of animals go through these cruel measures to allegedly ensure safety of products for…

With America choosing to throw out products tested on animals, the question people must ask themselves is, is animal testing really that bad? Arguing that rats who were born in laboratories and raised to be tested on is wrong, it makes people wonder if it really is bad. Animals are very similar to humans and resemble them outstandingly. With critters slowly becoming a widely talked about source in the world, communities have begun a debate about what side to be on. “My own experience of over 60 years in biomedical research amply demonstrated that without the use of animals and of human beings, it would have been impossible to acquire the important knowledge needed to prevent much suffering and premature death not only among humans but also among [other] animals.” said Albert Sabin, who was a Polish American medical researcher, best known for developing the oral polio vaccine which has played a key role in nearly eradicating the disease.…

There are alternatives to animal testing I believe it is starting to get close to the time when the scientist need to start using those alternatives. There is nothing wrong with running these test, but there is a time that the scientist cross the line and I believe that when a animal is killed from all these test that is crossing the line. It is time for a new era of testing on animals it is time for the scientist to use…
