In the short story, “Thank you Ma’am” the author, Hughes uses irony to surprise the reader and the characters throughout the story. The situational and dramatic irony surprises the boy, Roger and reader by the actions that the main character, Mrs Jones took when Roger failed to steal the purse while she was walking home on the sidewalk. Irony is used in the stories “Sorry, Right Number” by Stephen King and “Back There” by Rod Serling. Verbal irony uses sarcasm to hide how the character actually feels, while situational irony is what is the opposite of what is expected from that situation. Irony is needed in both of these stories because it builds suspense, makes the desire of the reader to keep reading, and making the overall story more enjoyable. In King’s “Sorry, Right Number”, he uses verbal irony through the stage directions in Act 1 where Connie asks Dennis “Do you think Aunt Dawn’s…

(198). McCandless' personality, pushing people away, causes irony here due to the fact he had encountered no one during the four months between his entrance into the bush and his death there of starvation and is discovered not by one person but by five. All of these people who found the note were within days of McCandless' death but no one had never noticed his existence in the wild before. This might possibly be because of his personality, making it ironic that no one had come to his rescue until it was too late. Considering that Chris eventually would die of starvation, McCandless' gift of $24,000 to OXFAM, an organization dedicated to fighting hunger, is also an example of irony: “What Walt, Billie, and Carine didn't know when they flew down to Atlanta to attend Chris' commencement-what nobody knew-was that he would shortly donate all the money in his college fund to OXFAM American, a charity dedicated to fighting hunger.”…

They will not carry far through the trees and undergrowth," said Georg, "but we can try. Together, then. " This is ironic because they are shouting out into the wild, but they know it is not going to help. In the end, when…

A specific piece of sarcasm is when the 211th, 212th, and 213th are mentioned because the U. S. Constitution has no where near that many amendments (Vonnegut Jr. 1). Furthermore, the fact that people of average intelligence thought in only short bursts when in actuality, people of average intelligence do not think in short bursts, but can actually carry a conversation (Vonnegut Jr. 1). Dramatic irony is also used through the fact that George and Hazel are oblivious to the reality of society while the reader can see the entire picture (Vonnegut Jr. 6). In addition, the ballerina masks are ironic because it is an ugly mask that hides the beauty beneath (Vonnegut Jr. 1). Harrison himself is ironic because he is a hyperbole meaning that no one is actually that strong, tall and handsome (Vonnegut Jr. 4).…

Situational irony is often used by writers to show incongruences between theory and reality. Douglass sometimes wished that he was illiterate and stupid so that he would not understand the breadth of the injustices against slaves. Unfortunately, Douglass revealed that having knowledge can be a curse when coupled with a lack of power. Douglass drew attention to a complicated facet of his life by using situation irony.…

One instance of irony comes from the two mothers, while Julian’s mother is racist and shows prejudice toward African-Americans, she still shows her kind-hearted nature toward the good people of the race, like her nurse, and Carver, the little boy. Julian’s mother decides she will give a penny to the boy, despite being tight on money. The ironic element reveals itself: instead of embracing the kindness, Carver’s mother “explode[s] like a piece of machinery that had been given one ounce of pressure too much”, simple-mindedly believing Julian’s mother is being condescending, as Julian suspected the woman would (O’Connor 668). The woman struck Julian’s mother, and the blow ultimately causes her death. Tragically and ironically, she died over an act of kindness.…
