Acid rain/acid percipitation

Conversion of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides to acids that return to Earth's surface

Air pollution

Concentration of choice substances, such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and solid particulates, at a greater level than occurs in average air

Acid deposition

Sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, emitted by burning fossil fuels, that enter the atmosphere-where they combine with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid-and return to Earth's surface

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)

The amount of oxygen required by aquatic bacteria to decompose a given load of organic waste; a measure of water pollution

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)

A gas used as a solvent, propellant in aerosols, a refrigerant, and in plastic foams and fire extinguishers

Greenhouse effect

The anticipated increase in Earth's temperature caused by carbon dioxide (emitted by burning fossil fuels) trapping some of the radiation emitted by the surface

Non Point-Source pollution

Pollution that originates from a large, diffuse area if a body of water

Photochemical smog

An atmospheric condition formed through a combination of weather conditions and pollution, especially from motor vehicle emissions

Point-source pollution

Pollution that enters a body of water from a specific source

Ozone

A gas that absorbs ultraviolet solar radiation, found in the stratosphere, a zone 15 to 50 kilometers (9 to 30 miles) above the Earth's surface

Ozone depletion

reduction in the concentration of ozone in the ozone layer.

Sanitary landfill

A place to deposit solid waste, where a layer of earth is bulldozed over garbage each day to reduce, emissions of gases and odors from the decaying trash, to minimize fires, and to discourage vermin

Assembly line production/fordism

A form of mass production in which each worker is assigned one specific task to perform repeatedly

Deindustrialization

decline in industrial activity in a region or economy.

International division of labor

It is a spatial division of labor which occurs when the process of production is no longer confined to national economies. Under the "old" international division of labor, until around 1970, underdeveloped areas were incorporated into the world economy principally as suppliers of minerals and agricultural commodities.

Just in time delivery

a strategy to increase efficiency and decrease waste by receiving goods only as they are needed in the production process, thereby reducing inventory costs

Maquiladora

a factory in Mexico run by a foreign company and exporting its products to the country of that company.

Topocide

Topocide is the deliberate culling of a place through industrial expansion and change, so that its earlier landscape and character are destroyed.

Right to work laws

prohibit union security agreements, or agreements between employers and labor unions, that govern the extent to which an established union can require employees' membership, payment of union dues, or fees as a condition of employment

Vertical integration

an arrangement in which the supply chain of a company is owned by that company.
