Conscious Raising. Involves a group attempting to get a largergroup to focus on a cause or condition. This was popularized by US feministsduring the 1960s. Used today to bring attention towards diseases, conflicts andcauses.


Betty Friedan


A feminist from the 1960s who wrote the Feminine Mystique,which was credited with bringing about the second wave of American Feminism.She was the first president of the National Organization for Women. Also, shesupported the Equal Rights Amendment.


Bobby Seale


Founder of the Black Panther Party. He was inspired byMalcolm X. The Black Panther party stood for self defense and “freedom by anymeans necessary.”


Pentagon Papers


A series of papers made by the Department of Defense thatwere leaked by the New York Times. Papers showed that the United States soughtto contain China and that they caused the rise and fall of South Vietnam’spresident Diem Bien Phu. Lastly, they revealed that the war was expanding intoLaos and Cambodia.


Vietnamization


Vietnamization involved having South Vietnam be moreprepared to defend itself from an invasion from North Vietnam the United Statesbegan to withdraw. After the US withdrew, they felt Vietnamzation was complete.However, South Vietnam fell soon after US withdrew.

This is an excerpt from Tim O Brian’s story, the Thingsthey Carried. He felt that he was a coward because he went to Vietnam ratherthan leaving for Canada or standing up against the war. He went to war becausehe was afraid to stand up for what he believed in.


My Lai


US soldiers massacred men, women and children in My Lai.Some were tortured before they were killed and their bodies were laid inditches. The event was covered up at first, but word of what happened wasleaked about by journalist Seymour Hersh. This led to massive backlash in theUnited States


Cointelpro


Stands for CounterIntelligence Program and was run by theFBI. It at first sought to interrupt the Communist party in the United States,but it expanded to investigate other groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan and theBlack Panther Party. The program was canceled due to how it violated First AmendmentRights.


Bernadine Dohrn


A leader of the Weather Underground, which was responsible forbombing the United States Capitol, the Pentagon and several police stations inNew York. She helped write the manifesto, “You don’t need a Weatherman to knowwhich way the wind blows.” She was arrested, but convictions were overturneddue to how the FBI violated her rights.


Stonewall

A series of violent demonstrations against the police thatoccurred in Stonewall, New York in response to how homosexual people weretreated. These demonstrations led to the modern fight for LGBT rights.

Neal Cassidy drove Ken Kesey’s bus. He bought a bus inorder to film his counterculture experiences. The trip was chaotic and film ofit was only released in 2011.


Stokley Carmichael


The chairman of the SNCC after 1966. He increased the militancy of the movement. He removed white members from the SNCC. Worked for the PanAfrican movement.


SCUM


A feminist manifesto published in 1967 by Valerie Solanas.She argued that men have ruined the world and women needed to fix it. In orderto accomplish this, she argued that women would form an organization calledSCUM that would overthrow society and anihlate the male sex.


Huey P. Newton


Another founder of the Black Panther party. The organization was central to the Black Power movement.

The assassination of an officer by his own troops, which was usually carried out with a grenade. This occurred in Vietnam.


PTSD

A mental health problem people face after a life threatening event, such as combat. People who returned form Vietnam often suffered from PTSD due to how there was no where that was completely safe.


Chicago Seven


The Chicago Seven were seven political extremists who wereaccused of working to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention inChicago. Groups included Students for a Democratic Society. Five of the sevenwere convicted in 1970, but their convictions were overturned in 1972.


UNIA


UNIA stands for Universal Negro Improvement Association. It wasfounded by Marcus Garvey and it sought to establish educational andinstitutional opportunities for African Americans. This movement received alarge amount of support, but it diminished after Garvey’s arrest for mailfraud.
