Metaphor |
Compares two things that are not alike. The author wants to help us picture what they're saying. The sentence does not have like or as in it. Ex. My mom was a real bear this morning. |

Theme |
The moral, lesson, or heart of the story. Rarely stated so you must infer. Not the topic. Ex. Cinderella Topic- she marries a prince Theme- good things happen to good people - loves difficulty - lost dreams |

Soph- wise Sophomore- tenth grade high schooler, second year in college Philosophy- love and pursue of wisdom Philosopher- a specialist in philosophy Sophisticated- having acquired worldly knowledge of refinement |

Anecdote |
A short story significant to the topic at hand; usually adding personal knowledge or experience to the topic. |

Symbolism |
When an object or word represents an abstract idea different from the literal meaning. An action, person, place, word, or object can all have symbolic meaning. |

Allusion |
A reference to something from the bible, mythology, history or classic works of literature. Ex. Prose- "His Herculean strength surprised the crowd" Mythological reference to the legendary Hercules in Greeks myth |

Point of View |
The perspective from which a piece of text is written. 1st- told from the point of view of one character (I, we, me) 2nd- narrator addresses you (you, your) 3rd- limited: the thoughts and feelings of one character, omniscient: all knowing, objective: facts and events |

Sign- to sign, mark, or seal Signal- an act, event, or the like that causes or encores some act or action Signature- persons' name or a mark representing it Insignia- a badge or distinguishing mark of office or honor Design- to plan and fashion artistically or skillfully |
