Cultural anthropologists study human cultures, past and present. They try to explain how and why people live the way they do.
What did the excavation of Cancuen in 2000 show that differed from excavations of other Mayan cities?
In 2000, the excavation of Cancuen revealed a huge palace with houses and workshops surrounding it. They did not find any temples like in other Mayan cities. Archeologists concluded that Cancuen was a center of trade. Perhaps religion played a smaller part in Mayan culture than previously thought.
