Manorialism is a piece of land under the control of a lord. He was given this land by the king in exchange for loyalty to the king. It was self-supporting. Serfs and peasants worked the land. They paid heavy taxes and days of service to the lord.
What is self-sufficiency
Able to supply one's own needs

Manors were independent or self sufficient -
they did not rely on "outsiders" for food, clothing, protection
