Both the Interstate Commerce Act and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act had their reasons for achieving what they wanted because it meant greater and fairer changes.

Compare and contrast the National Labor Union, Knights of Labor, and American Federation of Labor in regard to their origins, goals, and leadership. Account for the failure of the first two and for the success of the AFL.

The nation labor union was racist. It excluded the chinese and made only nominal efforts to include women and blacks.



Knights of Labor include all workers but they were associated with the bloody Hay market Square episode.


Business leaders of the late nineteenth century have been characterized both as greedy and unscrupulous “robber barons” and as great “captains of industry” whose entrepreneurial skill and tactics produced economic growth. Which view do you find more persuasive? Why?

The AF of L was against politics for economic strategies and goals. Their leader (Samuel Gompers) didn't fight against capitalism and only asked better wages, hours, and working conditions. They weren't as radical as the knights.
