Autonomic Nervous System |
A part of the peripheral nervous system that connects to glands and smooth muscles. Consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. |
Brain Stem |
"Trunk" of the brain. Contains the medulla, pons, midbrain, and diencephalon. |
Broca's Arena |
An area of the frontal lobe in the left hemisphere. Associated with language. |
Central Sulcus |
The major fissure that divides the frontal and parietal-occipital lobes. |
Cerebellum |
The distinctive structure at the back of the brain. |
Cerebral Cortex |
The outermost grey matter of the cerebrum, the distinctive convolutions characteristic of the mammalian brain. |
Cerebral Hemispheres |
The cerebral cortex, underlying white matter, and subcortical structures. |
Efferent nerves |
Nerves that carry messages from the brain to glands and organs in the periphery. |
Forebrain |
A part of the nervous system that contains the cerebral hemispheres, thalamus, and hypothalamus. |
Frontal lobe |
The front most part of the cerebrum (anterior). |
Hippocampus |
A nucleus inside the temporal lobe associated with learning and memory. |
Hypotalamus |
Part of the diencephalon. Regulates biological drives with pituitary glands. |
Limbic System |
A loosely defined network of nuclei involved with learning and emotion. |
