What protocol does Cisco use to exchange VLAN information between switches?
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP).
What modes can VTP operate in?
Server mode, Client mode, and Transparent mode. A switch in server mode can make configuration changes and save them to memory. Nothing is saved in memory on a client, and no changes can be made. Transparent mode switches simply forward VTP traffic without examining it.
What is the most compelling reason to use VTP?
VTP Pruning, which allows switches to prevent broadcasts and unknown unicasts from being sent to switches that have no ports in the destination VLAN.
How do you enter VLAN configuration mode on a switch?
vlan database
How could you tell a switch to place ethernet ports 3-9 into VLAN 2, in access mode?
interface range fastEthernet 0/3 - 9, then switchport access vlan 2
What are the trunk configuration options that can be used with the switchport mode command?
"access" disables trunk mode entirely. "trunk" always tries to trunk. "dynamic desirable" will always trunk with switches set to trunk, dynamic desirable, or dynamic auto. "dynamic auto" trunks to switches set to trunk or dynamic desirable.
