Cell Theory |
1. Cells are the basic unit of life's structure and function (Virchow) 2. All cells come from pre-existing cells |
First Exception to Cell Theory |
The first cell could not have come from a previous cell |
Second Exception to Cell Theory |
Mitochondria and chloroplasts are organelles capable of reproducing themselves. |
Third Exception to Cell Theory |
Viruses are non-living. They need a host to do any life functions. |
Cellular Organization |
Protons, electrons, neutrons<atoms<organic compounds<organelles<cell<tissue<organs<systems<body |
Plant Cells traits |
Rectangular, Cell Wall, Chloroplast, Cell membrane, Large Vacuole, Nucleus off-center, no Centrioles |
Animal Cell Traits |
Round, Centered Nucleus, Centrioles, only Cell Membrane, Small Vacuole |
Cell Membrane |
A semi-permable barrier that allows some things in or out. Matains homeostasis. Made of proteins and lipids. Gives the cell shape and support. Contains antigens (cell receptors) that allow cells to communicate with each other. Small cellular wastes are excreted out through the cm. |
Nucelus |
The control center of the cell. Contains the genetic material DNA (chromosomes). Contains the nucleolus which makes ribosomes. |
Cytoplasm |
The watery gel that fills the cell. Where chemical reactions take place. |
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) |
The ER transports cell secretions. "Rough" ER has ribosome on it, "smooth" ER doesn't. Next to nucelus. |
Ribosomes |
Combines Amino Acids to make protein (protein synthesis). |
Golgi Body |
Packages and stores excess secretions (cell stuff) in the cell. NOT next to nucleus. |
Vacuole |
Where food, water, or waste is stored, but not together. Plants have giant vacuoles but animals have tiny vacuoles. |
Mitochondria |
Produces ATP (energy) by preforming the life process called aerobic respiration. |
Lysosomes |
Contains enzymes to break apart old cell organelles and food. |
Centrioles |
Pull chromosomes apart with spindle fibers during cell divison. Come in pairs. |
Cell Wall |
The outer cover of a plant cell. Used for protection, shape, and support. Made of a starchy substance called cellulose. |
Chloroplasts |
Contains the green pigment chlorophyll used in photosynthesis. |
