Self concept

Who you think you are. The stable set of perceptions you hold of yourself.

Perceived self

The person you believe yourself to be. Private. Unlikely to reveal all of it to another person.

Presenting self

A public image. The way we want others to view us.

Significant others

People's who opinions are especially valued. Evaluations from these people are especially powerful.

Social comparison

Evaluating others based on how we compare with others. Ex. Are we smart or ugly?

What are the 2 types of social comparison?

1. Superior or inferior- compared to others am i smart , pretty, funny?


2. Same or different- Ex. No one like ballet . im weird cause im different and the only one

Identity/impression management

Communication strategies others use to influence how others view them. Many messages aim at creating a desired impression.

Characteristics of impression management

Striving to construct many identities, collaborative, deliberate or unconscious. Collaborative communicators construct their identities in response to the behaviors of others.

Self-fulfilling Prophecies

Occurs when a persons expectations of an event, and his/her subsequent behavior based on those expectations, make the event more likely to come true .

Self imposed prophecies

Occurs when your own expectations influence your behavior. Ex. In sports you probably psyched yourself into playing better or worse.

Other-imposed prophecy

Prophecies imposed by others onto someone else.
