Purpose of Acid-Base Titration |
goals is to find the concentration of an acid (vinegar) by titrating a base (NaOH, sodium hydroxide) into an acid, then graphing to find the equivalence point |
Volume of Base dependent or independent |
independent (plotted on x-axis) ml |
pH levels dependent or independent |
dependent (plotted on y-axis) |
Titration 1 |
-vinegar was pipeted into an erlenmeyer flask and water was added to increase volume -2 gts of indicator soln was added to acid -base added to buret -titrated base into the acid and use pH meter to record levels every 0.5 ml - continued to record a little after the acid turned pink |
Titration 2 |
-same procedure was followed w/out indicator soln -measure every 0.5 ml until we got close to the equivalence point, then 0.2 ml until we reached the equivalence point, then continued with every 0.5ml |
how do you find the equivalence point |
graphed data and found the place where the graph has a straight up and down line, halfway on that line is the equivalence point |
MaVa=MbVb |
Ma-unknown molarity of acid, what we are solving for Va-volume of acid Mb-known molarity of base Vb-found by the equivalence point on graph |
