Axial Skeleton
|
Consists of the bones that lie around the longitudinal axis of the human body, an imaginary vertical line that runs from the head to the space between the feet.

Wormian Bone
|
Small bones located in sutures (immovable joints in adults) between certain cranial bones. The number of these vary person to person.
|
|
Sesamoid Bone
|
These bones develop in certain tendons where there is considerable friction. Functionally, these bones protect tendons from excessive wear and tear and they often change the direction of pull of a tendon, which improves the mechanical advantage at a joint.

Fissure
|
A groove, fold or slit that may be normal or abnormal.
|
|
Fontanel
|
A mesenchyme-filled space where bone formation is not yet complete, especially between the cranial bones of an infant's skull.

Foramen
|
A passage or opening; a communication between two cavities of an organ, or a hole in a bone for passage of vessels or nerves.

Fossa
|
A furrow or shallow depression.
|

Sinus
|
A hollow in a bone (paranasal sinus) or other tissue; a channel for blood (vascular sinus); any cavity having a narrow opening.

Skull
|
The skeleton of the head consisting of the cranial and facial bones.

Suture
|
An immovable fibrous joint that joins skull bones.

Zygomatic Arch
|
The zygomatic process of the temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygomatic bone form this arch.

Intervertebral Disc
|
Found between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae from the second cervical vertebra to the sacrum and account for about 25% of the height of the vertebral column.

Vertebral (Spinal) Canal
|
The vertebral foramina of all the vertebrae form this canal for the spinal cord to pass through.

|
Costal Cartilage
|
The hyaline cartilage that forms an attachment between the anterior part of the sternum and the rib for the first 7 ribs.
