What is Clinical Exercise Physiology? |
use physical activity and exercise to prevent or delay the onset of chronic disease in healthy individuals and provide therapeutic or functional benefits to individuals with disease conditions or physical disabilities |
|
What does a Clinical Exercise Physiologist need to have knowledge about? |
Requires an understanding of how the body responds to acute and chronic physical activity and exercise in both health and diseased condidtions |
|
Who developed testing and training procedures for healthy and diseased individuals? |
AHA - American Heart Assosisation
ACSM- American College of Sports Medicine |
|
What are the duties and responsibilities of a Clinical Exercise Physiologist? |
Conductiong pre-exercise screening
Performing exercise testing and evaluation
Developing exercise percriptions
Instructing individuals in proper training techniques
Supervising exercise programs in varioius settings |
|
Two types of testing |
Diagnostic Testing
Functional Capacity |
|
What is diagnostic testing? |
helps assess the presence of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease |
|
What is functional capacity? |
Helps assess an individual's capcaity to participate in physical activity and exercise |
|
What are the 3 reasons for testing? |
Is it safe?
Baseline for improving
Effectivley design exercise precription |
|
What is the pretesting procedure? |
Pretest screening for health risk
Physical examination from doctor
Health History
Informed consent (informing patient of risks of the program) |
|
What measurements does the pysiologisy take during the test? |
HR BP Rating of precieved exertion Electrocradiogram (ECG/EKG) Echocardiography (sound waves / structure of the heart) Oxygen consumption and functional capacity |
|
2 Different test that could be taken |
Submaximal graded exercise
Maximal Graded exercise testing |
|
What is submaximal Graded exercise? |
Dont test to the peak
1 -Instead the peak is calculated by 220-Age of individual= Age predicted peak
Whatever the predicted peak is, once the individual is at 85% of that peak, then they are stopped
2- Use a scale of 6-20, stop once they claim to be at 15 Used when testing for health |
|
What is maximal graded exercise testing? |
know maximal areobic exercise, HRmax, maxVO2
Only stop if problems start to present physical problems
Used for performance |
|
What is an exercise percription? |
Plan for physical activity and exercise
Achieve specific outcomes improve in fitness, reduction in disease risk, or weight loss
meets interest, goals, health needs, and clinical condition
Based on sound principles and innovative programming |
|
Specific disease conditions: Cardiovascular Disease |
Coronary Artery Disease
Angina Pectoris
Mycocardial infraction |
|
What is coronary artery diesase? |
The blood vessels that give the heart O2 |
|
What is angina pectoris? |
pain or discomfort in the chest when the heart isnt getting enough O2 to meet the demand |
|
What is myocardial infraction? |
Heart attack, the heart is working more than the demand of O2 and the tissue dies |
