What are serial transmissions? |
Throughout the transmission, only one character can be sent at a time. |
What are parallel transmissions? |
Every letter of the string is sent at once, however this means serial connections require more wires, making them more expensive. |
What is Bandwidth? |
The amount of data that can be transmitted along a communication channel. Bandwidth is measured in hertz (Hz). The range in this case is the difference between the upper and lower bounds of the frequency. |
What is Bit Rate? |
The speed at which the transmission is taking place. Bit rate is measured in bits per second (bps). The speed of transfer. |
What is Baud Rate? |
Another term to describe the speed at which data can be transmitted. One Baud represents one electronic state change per second. An electronic state change may be a change in frequency, in voltage, in amplitude or waveform. |
What is Latency? |
The time delay that occurs when any component within a computer system is responding to an instruction. Latency is caused by the travel distance of the signal through wires and cables. |
What are the 3 types of latency? |
Propagation latency (Logic gates), Transmission latency (communication medium), Processing latency (networks/servers). |
Describe Synchronous transmission. |
"Occurring at the same time" The communicating signals will synchronize their transmission signals. If the two devices are not synchronized then data could be lost during transmission. |
Describe Asynchronous transmission. |
Does not require permanent synchronization. Instead, it synchronizes only for the duration by sending additional bits of information called start and stop bits. |
What is TCP/IP? |
TCP/IP handles the routing and re-assembly of data packets. |
What is HTTP? |
A set of rules governing the exchange or the different types of file that make up displayable web pages. |
What is FTP? |
Similar to HTTP, FTP is commonly used when downloading program files. |
What is a LAN? |
Local area network, A group of computers and peripherals connected over a small geographical distance. usually covering just one building. |
What is a WAN? |
Wide area network, A group of computers and peripherals connected over a larger geographical distance. This could even include global networking. |
What jobs does the router perform? |
Receives packets, acts as a firewall, acts as a switch, Wireless access point, converts digital to analogue. |
Describe the star topology. |
Each computer or peripheral is connected to a central server through their own individual connection. |
