What is cracking? |
The process that is used to break long-chain hydrocarbons down into shorter, more useful hydrocarbons |
What is a catalyst? |
A substance that can speed up a reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction |
What is catalyic cracking? |
The process of breaking down long-chain hydrocarbons into shorter ones using a catalyst, often aluminium oxide. |
What is steam cracking? |
The process of breaking down long chain hydrocarbons into shorter ones by mixing the vapour of hydrocarbons with steam and heating to very high temperatures |
What is a thermal decomposition reaction? |
A reaction where one substance chemically changes into at least two new substances when it's heated |
How does catalytic cracking works? |
Heat the long chain hydrocarbons to vaporise them (turn them into a gas) The vapour is the passed over a hot, powdered catalyst Aluminium oxide is one of the catalysts used The long chain molecules split apart or 'crack' on the surface of the specks of catalyst |
