My job for digital literacy

We are no longer the main source ofinformation

We need to allow students to figure out information out this will ensure students construct their own answers, it instills curiosity, extends possibilities,

We need to be the innovator, the illuminator the motivator, the facilitator

We need to put students at the centre of their learning, inquiry based learning, project based learning, technology challenges, investigation, students need to analyze content and critically evaluate

I support my students to become active participants in setting their own goals, managing their own learning and assessing their progress

I had to customize and personalize learning activities to address diverse learning styles, learning strategies and abilities using digital tools and resources

Today I would have developed a blog or classroom website and link it to Google Doc and Google calendar to keep allow my students

and parents access to me 24/7

Went over expectations online etiquette and what ethical use ofdigital technology means, not visiting inappropriate website, no visiting chatsites or site for game playing

Teaching students how to use usb flashdrive to save information

Teaching them to be good digital citizens

Students and Digital Literacy

Students were demonstrated creative thinking, they used DL to communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively.

They used digital tools to research from a host of websites and they gather and sift through the information until it was organized into their own words.

They used digital tools to plan and manage the big idea,

And they were responsible when using digital literacy they didn’t go to inappropriate website

And students understood how to use digital system by trouble shooting in word, reading the help menu if they did not understand while others easily maneuvered around websites

Digital Literacy made them feel more confident in organizing information, understanding different models and theories, realizing that the big idea has many alternative solutions, and being able to transfer new knowledge and skills learned and apply it in oral communication, to problem solving and visual representation

Malcolm

How students use this technology

ifI have a struggling reader you have the choice of a book or using a tablet (ipad,) that would give you the extra help you need cause if their reading a book or listening to an audio book they can play it back, and engage in phonics, they don’t know what the word means just look it up in the dictionary, and plus they can record their thoughts and plan for next steps, confusing text and words comes to life when viewing learning video clips, podcasts and other related applications, and this makes them confident and can participate in class and even online discussions and online discussions helps you spend more time learning and thinking as you spend more time with your peers—cause it is about expending student’s understanding of literacy and creating life long learners)

Struggling learners benefit by virtual manipulatives, video lessons and dynamic graphic organizers=use this to incorporate to Malcolm’s response) Digital literacy helps in all subject areas when students create an e-portfolio to store work and reflect on their progress

Students can find information

whatever, whenever and wherever, using google, wikepedia, you tube, blogs, cellphones, tablets, laptopsTeachers cease to be the main source of knowledge in actuality we are the filter And we have to show them through applications how to validate, synthesize. communicate, collaborate and problem solve information we have to teach the skills so students can remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create so when their resolving questions like

How to fix my computer?

How can I get to my friend’s cottage?

Where’ s the best camp to goto, read reviews and cross check against other websites

Bloom Taxonomy

Creation

What does creation mean today: blogging, podcasting, animation, planning, recording, designing, programming, editing, tagging, mashing, subscribing, experimenting, reflecting, searching, posting, locating, linking, integrating, networking, uploading and downloading And to me, digital literacy encompasses Bloom Taxonomy because it pertains to responsibility, reliability and integrity

*(And as teachers we have to uphold ethical principals and teach them about what pirating is, plagiarism, slander, copyright, confidentiality, professionalism,)

Teachers need to rethink tools

What does it mean in the classroom: that we need to rethink the tools we use and the types of problems we ask students to solve How could you gather and discuss data via, cellphones, twitter, facebook, online surveys and rss feeds, reading reviews, cross checking various websites How could you talk about reliable sources using, google, wikepedia, blogs, podcasts. Students collaborate using chat, skype, google docs, instagram, twitter, facebook, tumbler,

The teaching role is changing

The teaching role is changing, partnership in learning, technological literacy, videos, camera other tools, technology is a part of their lifestyle, many ways to receive information online, students need to evaluate and then use the information, we need computer training (teachers) a new generation of teachers who grew up online and they want thetechnology in the classroom, technology invades privacy, add ways of using technology, add technology strand to the curriculum, widens literacy focus, multiple literacies like the basic words numbers critical and visual, beingable to read the world, information literacy, visual media literacy like symbols, graphs, social literacy how to read people and relationships andconnect with people, outdoor literacy first nation literate about their surroundings

Examples of Digital Literacy

Understanding how to use web browsers, search engines, email, text, wiki, blogs, Photoshop, Powerpoint, video creation/editing software , etc. to showcase learning.

Evaluating online resources for accuracy and trustworthiness of information. Using online classes to enhance learning in the classroom.

Choosing appropriate media to showcase learning - understand what platforms will best illustrate your message and learning to peers and educators.

Using an interactive whiteboard in the classroom for lessons and allowing students to use the interactive whiteboard on a daily basis.

Encouraging students to use technology to showcase their learning. Using the web ( web sites video, music) to enhance the learning of your students.

Students and teachers creating online content to be utilized both in and out of the classroom.

Digital literacy is when students are able to engage with multi-media to read and interpret text, sounds and images. Digital literacy is when students can manipulate and evaluate data to construct their own meaning. Digital literacy also includes a student having knowledge about how to use technology to construct meaning, but most importantly in ways that are appropriate to their needs. Students who know how to use technology are also instructed by parents and teachers on how to use it effectively and appropriately to communicate a message. Most students today have more knowledge about technology than their teachers, but most have not had instruction on how and when to use technology appropriately. "Too often the focus is on learning the technology itself, with little time given to discussing what is or is not appropriate

Students are much more involved and engaged with this type of learning

Students are much more involved and engaged with this type of learning, engagement sparks motivation whether individually or in groups their able to problem solve and think critically. They ask questions, explain their thinking, justify their responses and evaluate their ideas and opinions; they learn how to cooperative and effectively collaborate with one another.
