What is a sphere?

A sphere is shaped like a ball, with all points on the surface at an equal distance from the center.

Describe Earth's shape?

Earth's shape is somewhat is flattened at the poles and with a slight bulge at the equator.

Know the different Earth's systems?

Atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere,cryosphere.

What is the atmosphere?

Layer of gases surrounding Earth.

What makes up the geosphere?

Earth's entire solid body.

What makes up the biosphere?

All living organisms on Earth.

What is the hydrosphere?

All liquid water on Earth.

What is the cryosphere?

All frozen water on Earth.

What is gravity?

The force that every object exerts on all other objects because of their masses.

How does distance affect gravity?

The more mass either object has, or the closer together they are the stronger the gravitational force.

How does mass affect gravity?

The more mass either object has the stronger gravity is.

What played a major force in the formation of our solar system?

Gravity.

How did our planet form?

Gas, ice, dust- Nebula

What role did gravity play in shaping our planet?

Pulled materials together.

What is density?

The amount of mass in a material per unit volume.

What did scientist use to determine Earth's interior?

Earthquake waves.

What happens to tempature as you go deeper into the Earth?

Tempature increases?

What happens to to pressure as you go deeper into the Earth?

Pressure increases.`

What role does earthquake waves play in determining what the Earth's interior is like?

Some waves cant travel through some waves can't which therefore means some layers are solid and some are liquid.

How are the layers of the Earth different?

Different densities and materials.

What is the crust? What is it made of?

Brittle rocky outer layer of Earth, low mass, silicone, and oxygen.

What are the two types of crust?

Oceanic and continental.

Compare and contrast oceanic and continental crust?

Oceanic- Thin,dense

Continental- Thick,less dense

What is the mantle?

Thick middle layer in the solid part of Earth.`

Describe the mantle.

More iron and magnesium.

What is the lithosphere? Describe the lithosphere.

The crust and uppermost mantle into a rigid layer. Brittle and rigid, like the rocks in the crust.

What is the asthenosphere? Describe the asthenosphere?

Plastic layer within the mantle. Below the lithosphere, rocks are so hot that tiny bits melt.

What does the word "plastic" mean when talking about the asthenosphere?

Plastic refers to materials that are soft enough to flow.

What is largest layer of the Earth?

The mantle?

What is the core?

The dense metallic center of Earth.

What are the two parts of the core?

Solid Inner and Liquid Outer.

Describe the outer core.`

The mantle and core are made of different materials, and have different melting tempatures.

Describe the inner core.

Dense ball of solid iron crystals.

What is the magnetosphere?

The outer part of the magnetic field that interacts with these particles.

What part of the Earth is covered with water?

70%.

Are the physical features on Earth the same as in the ocean?

Yes but we can't see them.

What are landforms? Give examples.

Topographic features formed by natural processess. Mountains.

How are landforms identified?

Shape, slope, elevation, relief, oreintation.

What is elevation?

Describes height.

What is relief? What is low relief? High relief?

Relief- difference in elevation

Low relief- small difference

High relief- big difference

What is topography?

Shape of an area.

What are plains? How do they form?

Plains- landforms with row relief and low elevation

Form- sediment deposited in different ways

What are platueas? How do they form?

Platueaus- Low relief and high elevation

Form- Earth uplift rock layers

What are mountains?

High relief and high elevation.

Describe how mountains form.

Buildup of lava on the ocean floor.

What are costal plains? How did they form?

Costal plains- plains along the water (East and Gulf Coast)

Form- sediments building up

What are interior plains?

Plains located in central U.S.A.

Describe three major landform regions in the U.S.A.

Mountains, plateaus, and plains
